Tonbruket, the bassist Dan Berglund’s band, who worked with Esbjörn Svensson in E.S.T, will start the night at the Tersane Stage that stands out with its spatial properties and genuine atmosphere. This concert will be followed by İlhan Erşahin’s “Love Trio”, which will be accompanied by master percussionist Arto Tunçboyacıyan. The marvellous closing of the event is by Randy Brecker/ Bill Evans Soulbop Featuring Medeski, Martin & Wood.

Isabelle Moretti is one of the most appealing figures both among harpists and in the musical world today. Bright, enthusiastic and with real temperament, she embues her instrument with inimitable style, generosity, sincerity and nobility. Crowned with prizes at international harp competitions in Geneva, Munich and Israel, Isabelle Moretti is invited to the greatest concert halls all over the world. She appears with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra (most recently under the baton of Sir Neville Marriner), the National Orchestra of Lyon, the Paris Orchestral Ensemble, the German Chamber Orchestra Bremen, the Israel Chamber Orchestra, the Orquestra de Córdoba, the Spanish Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra.

Isabelle Moretti’s solo repertoire extends from the music of the eighteenth century and the first sonatas for pedal harp, to the most complex contemporary world premieres, which she frequently programmes in her recitals. Belinda Carlisle gained worldwide fame as the lead vocalist of The Go-Go's, who made history as the first all-female music group to write their own songs and play their own instruments to top the Billboard charts. British reggae band UB40 is back again to meet their Turkish fans at Matine 216.

Formed in 1978 in Birmingham, the band has placed more than 50 singles in the UK Singles Chart, and has also achieved considerable international success. One of the world's best-selling music artists, UB40 have sold over 70 million records. Their No. 1 hit singles include "Red Red Wine", "Can't Help Falling in Love" and "I Got You Babe".

The name "UB40" was selected in reference to the document issued to people claiming unemployment benefit
from the UK government's Department of Health and Social Security (DHSS) at the time of the band's formation. The designation UB40 stood for Unemployment Benefit, Form 40. Their first album was titled "Signing Off", as the band were signing off from or closing their claim on the unemployment benefit.

Despite great success in the UK, UB40's popularity in the United States was only established after they
released Labour of Love, an album of cover songs, in 1983. The album featured the song "Red Red Wine", a cover version of a Neil Diamond song; it stayed on the charts for over a hundred weeks.

In 2008 it was announced that Ali Campbell would be leaving the group after 30 years. It was originally stated that this was in order for Campbell to concentrate on solo projects.

In April 2008, the BBC reported that Campbell was to be replaced in the band by his brother Duncan Campbell.

A nightclub dancer... a smooth talking lawyer... and a cell block of sin. It would be a crime to miss it.
The musical Chicago is based on a play of the same name by reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins, who was assigned to cover the 1924 trials of murderesses Beulah Annan and Belva Gaertner for the Chicago Tribune.

Annan, the model for the character of Roxie Hart, was 23 when she was accused of the April 3, 1924, murder of Harry Kalstedt. The Tribune reported that Annan played the foxtrot record "Hula Lou" over and over for two hours before calling her husband to say she killed a man who "tried to make love to her". She was found "not guilty" on May 25, 1924. Velma is based on Gaertner, who was a cabaret singer. The body of Walter Law was discovered slumped over the steering wheel of Gaertner's abandoned car on March 12, 1924. Two police officers testified that they had seen a woman getting into the car and shortly thereafter heard gunshots. A bottle of gin and an automatic pistol were found on the floor of the car.
Gaertner was acquitted on June 6, 1924.
Watkins' sensational columns documenting these trials proved so popular that she decided to write a play based on them. The show received both popular and critical acclaim and even made it to Broadway in 1926, running for 172 performances. Cecil B. DeMille produced a silent film version, Chicago (1927),starring former Mack Sennett bathing beauty Phyllis Haver as Roxie Hart. It was later remade as Roxie Hart (1942) starring Ginger Rogers, but in this version, Roxie was accused of murder without having really committed it.

In the 1960s, Gwen Verdon read the play and asked her husband, Bob Fosse, about the possibility of creating a musical adaptation. Fosse approached playwright Watkins numerous times to buy the rights, but she repeatedly declined. In her later years, Watkins had become a born-again Christian and believed her play glamorized a scandalous way of living. However upon her death in 1969, her estate sold the rights to producer Richard Fryer, Verdon and Fosse. John Kander and Fred Ebb began work on the musical score, modeling each number on a traditional vaudeville number or a vaudeville performer. This format made explicit the show's comparison between "justice", "show-business", and contemporary society. Ebb and Fosse penned the book of the musical, with Fosse also directing and doing the choreography.

Chicago opened on June 3, 1975 at the 46th Street Theatre, and ran for a total of 936 performances.

Chicago was filmed in 2002, directed and choreographed by Rob Marshall, and adapted by screenwriter Bill Condon, staring Catherine Zeta-Jones, Renée Zellweger, and Richard Gere, also featuring Queen Latifah, John C. Reilly and Lucy Liu.

CHICAGO has been honored with 6 Tony Awards, 2 Olivier Awards, a Grammy and thousands of standing ovations.

"Jazz in Ramadan", a unique festival organized by Hakan Erdoğan Productions, and which proposes the idea that social peace comes first and foremost from the sharing artistic inspiration, will feature world-renown jazz musicians from the Muslim world all through the Ramadan.

Two beautiful historic Sultanahmet venues will be the settings for eight concerts, in “Jazz in Ramadan Festival”: the courtyard of the Archaeological Museum and the gardens of Topkapi Palace.

Festival, will host world-renown jazz musicians from the Muslim world such as Ahmad Jamal, Anouar Brahem, Abdullah Ibrahim and Dhafer Youssef.

Ilhan Ersahin and Aydin Esen will be the two popular jazz musicians participating from Turkey. “Aydin Esen Plays for Ramadan’ will be Esen’s special theme for the program. These musicians who are well known by İstanbul jazz listeners, this time will reach a broader and more mixed audience and even to future generation jazz fans.
Within the festival, among jazz music, there will also be Dede Efendi. Munip Utandi who is one of Turkey’s esteemed singers of Turkish classical music will be accompanied by the Dede Efendi Ensemble in the Archaelological Museum; it will be a treat for the classical Turkish Music listeners.

In the last concert Kudsi Erguner and his group will be taking the stage. Their concert heading is ‘Islam Blues’; this will be the final note of "Jazz in Ramadan", aiming to introduce the efforts of the musicians working in different musical forms and making contributions to the world culture.

Obituary is an American death metal band formed in 1985 in Tampa, Florida under the name Xecutioner and later renamed to Obituary. Amorphis is a Finnish metal band started by Jan Rechberger, Tomi Koivusaari, and Esa Holopainen in 1990. Initially, the band was a death metal act, but on later albums they evolved into playing other types of genres. They frequently use the Finnish national Kalevala as a source for their lyrics.

CANNIBAL CORPSE
Cannibal Corpse is an American death metal band from Buffalo, New York, formed in 1988. The band has released eleven studio albums, one boxed set, and one live album. Although Cannibal Corpse has had little radio or television exposure, a cult following began to build behind the group with albums such as 1991's Butchered at Birth and 1992's Tomb of the Mutilated. Cannibal Corpse reached over one-million in record sales worldwide in 2003, including 558,929 in the United States, making them the top-selling death metal band of all time.

The members of Cannibal Corpse were originally inspired by thrash metal bands like Slayer, Kreator, and Sodom, as well as other death metal bands like Morbid Angel and Death. The band's lyrics and album art, which draw heavily on horror fiction and horror films, are highly controversial. At different times, several countries have banned Cannibal Corpse from performing within their borders, or have banned the sale and display of original Cannibal Corpse album covers.

American thrash metal band, formed in 1980 in New Jersey. The band has been active since 1984, releasing 15 studio albums, 2 EPs, 2 live albums and a "covers" album. The band also has a notable mascot, a skeletal bat with a skull-like face, bony wings, and green eyes. It has appeared on most of their album covers. Overkill has gone through many line-up changes, with singer Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth and bassist D.D. Verni remaining as founding members. Along with Anthrax the band is one of the most successful east coast thrash metal bands.

British electronica band Faithless, consisting of Maxi Jazz, Sister Bliss and Rollo is best known for their dance songs ("Insomnia", "God Is a DJ" and "We Come 1"). Faithless have recorded several albums offering a wide variety and blend of styles. During their career they have sold over 12 million records worldwide.

The band was formed in 1995, the debut single "Salva Mea (Save Me)" was released that same year. Jazz acts as a vocalist in mostly rap format with lyrics that have strong spiritual or socio-political content. Bliss constructs most of the music herself electronically, but is talented in playing the piano, violin, saxophone and bass. Rollo heads and produces the band. Lead female vocals for many of their songs are performed by Pauline Taylor, who also performed lead vocals for singles by Rollo released under his monikers Rollo Goes Mystic and Rollo Goes Spiritual.

The International İstanbul Music Festival will take place between June 3-30. Including stars Arvo Pärt, Lang Lang and one of the most important orchestras of classical music, Vienna Philharmonic, The International İstanbul Music Festival will welcome over 500 local and foreign artists in its 38th year and will announce the arrival of summer with a prestigious programme.

In this year's İstanbul Music Festival, there will be 21 events including, symphony and chamber orchestras, vocal concerts, chamber music, recitals and jazz improvisations. As an addition to the classic venues of the festival such as the Hagia Eirene Museum, Archeology Museum, Tiled Kiosk, and Süreyya Opera House, Haliç Convention Centre also participates in the festival this year.

The programme of the 38th International İstanbul Music Festival is announced in a press conference at Four Seasons Hotel İstanbul at the Bosphorus. IKSV Chairman of Board of Directors Bülent Eczacıbaşı, Borusan Culture and Arts Chair of the Board of Directors Zeynep Hamedi and İstanbul Music Festival Director Yeşim Gürer Oymak spoke at the press conference.

At the press conference, İKSV Chairman Bülent Eczacıbaşı said that "in 1973, the International Istanbul Music Festival became a major player in Istanbul's culture and artistic life, and has been presenting the very best in classical music since then. Kyle Eastwood grew up in Carmel, California as the eldest son of actor Clint Eastwood. While doing his homework Kyle remembers listening to records of jazz stars such as Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Miles Davis playing in the house. His father had been attending the Monterey Jazz Festival since it began in 1958 and when his children were born it became a yearly family outing. Kyle's childhood had jazz as its soundtrack and he credits his father with introducing him to the joys of the bass line. Kyle's first memory of playing music was when Clint taught him how to play the left hand bass line of "Boogie Woogie" while he played the right hand solo over the top.

Initially studying film, Kyle soon realized that jazz was his true passion. After years of paying his dues gigging around Los Angeles and New York, his debut album From Here to There was released on Sony in 1998.

Showing his ability as an accomplished composer, Kyle began working in film with a contribution to the score for Mystic River. The film later won two Academy Awards.
In 2004, Kyle signed to Candid Records, one of the leading independent jazz labels in the UK, and released his second album Paris Blue. It resonates with swing, groove, and funk overtones. Kyle says, "My roots remain in jazz but I like adding all kinds of different flavors." The album climbed to No. 1 on the French Jazz charts.

Not satisfied with just a critically acclaimed record, Kyle expanded his film work , composing three pieces of music for the 2004 blockbuster Million Dollar Baby. The film won four Academy Awards.

Kyle's third album Now was released in 2006. It features songs written by Ben Cullum and collaborations with BBC Jazz Award winner pianist Andrew McCormack, as well as other musicians that make up the who's who of the London jazz scene. With tracks ranging from the post-modern jazz modalities of the title track, through the flirtatious melodies of "Let's Play" to the moody electronic groove of "September Nights," Now captured listeners worldwide.

In 2007 and 2008, Kyle delivered Now to live audiences on 3 continents. His performances with his live band have sold out venues and received the highest critical acclaim. Kyle has also managed to fit in composing soundtracks for a number of Clint Eastwood films including Flags Of Our Fathers, Letters from Iwo Jima and Gran Torino.

Kyle Eastwood's latest record, Metropolitain, is due to be released in June 2009 in the US. It was recorded in Paris and includes collaborations with some of the artists he admires most on the current scene: drummer Manu Katche, trumpeter Till Brunner, French star vocalist Camille and pianist Eric Legnini.

Co-produced by Erin Davis (son of Miles) and Kyle's long term writing partner Michael Stevens, the new album is set to capture the attention of the jazz world with its forward thinking style and the gathering of some of the cream of today's jazz musicians . The album will be followed by a worldwide tour in late 2009.

Having being selected as the 2010 European Capital of Culture, the Organising Committee decided to move The Rally of Turkey from Antalya to Istanbul to in order to contribute to the value of both WRC and Istanbul.

In its 6th consecutive year of the Rally of Turkey will be a unique event in the World Rally Championship calendar, where our guests will be able to enjoy the two continents at the same time.

The event will get underway on Thursday, April 15th in historical Sultanahmet Square, rigt in the middle, between the famous Blue Mosque and Haghia Sophia. Before the ceremonial start, all the competitors, media members and VIP guests will enjoy a unique ferry trip on the Bosphorus, with all the rally cars are on board.

Special stages of three days will be based on the Asian side of Istanbul. Generally, the roads are fast, wide, smooth surfaced gravel and flowing as praised by ERC and IRC drivers in the past three years. The Organising Committee arranged also a unique event for the rally: A Super Special Stage at Kadikoy, Istanbul’s most modern developement on the Asian side. This stage will provide a close-up view of these 2.0 litre turbo-charged monsters whilst they blast through the stage.

Moreover for three Support Series of World Rally Championship’s (WRC), Junior World Rally Championship, Pirelli Star Driver and Ford Fiesta Sporting Trophy International (FSTi), the 2010 competition will get underway with Rally of Turkey.

"A story of the city, Constantinople, Istanbul" is an original music project which is realized by taking into consideration basic criteria prescribed by the Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency. Taking the motto “Music is the witness of history” as its main theme, “A Story of the City, Constantinople – Istanbul” concert is about the cross-cultural interactions among civilizations and turning points, undergone by Istanbul through the course of its relations with European civilizations.

In the event, categorical schools (genres such as imperial, military, ethnic, religious music and Eastern and Arabic sounds, which the city imported from the Anatolian immigrants) will be presented to the
audience in a chronological order and in their original sounds.

Head of the Musicology-Music History Department at America's first Conservatory, world-famous New England Conservatory and; the founder and Chairman of the "Intercultural Institute" Prof. Dr. Robert Labaree regained the Middle Eastern harp called "Cheng” which Ottoman-Turkish music tradition has lost about 350 years ago. Prof. Labaree modified and improved the instrument by using “kanun” latches, thus it gets to fit to the current performance standards of Turkish music. Audience will get to chance to see the instrument “cheng” and enjoy the “cheng” performance by Labaree in this event.

The city of Istanbul has been the capital of two long-lasting empires—for its first ten centuries Roman (Byzantine) and, beginning in 1453, for the next five centuries Ottoman Turkish. With the end of the Ottoman Empire in 1923, the city lost its status as a capital, though it remains the cultural centerpiece of a modern Turkish republic. Memories of the city’s past—often different, frequently overlapping, sometimes conflicting—persist in the minds and in the music of its current inhabitants, most of them with deep ties to different regions, cultures and histories of the Middle East, East, Europe and the Balkans. They have inherited the memories of fifteen centuries of merchants and soldiers from many regions, of Ottoman Arabs, Turks, Armenians, Slavs, Kurds and Greeks, of Jews exiled from Spain, and of European diplomats, soldiers and missionaries. To the nostalgic yearning for the imperial glory of the past has been added a layer of memories of more recent changes in the city’s self-image: the slow decline and dismemberment of the Ottoman empire during the 19th century, the shift of political power to Ankara in the 1920s and the continued relocation to Istanbul of large numbers of people from the countryside of eastern and central Anatolia.

The many layers of communal memory in this program proceed through Greek Orthodox music, secular Greek music, Crusader songs, music of the Ottoman ceremonial and military ensembles, Ottoman court music, Sufi ceremonial music, Turkish folk music, Sephardic Jewish songs, urban music of the Armenians and Turks, and finally contemporary urban popular music full of longing and protest. On its own, each piece may communicate celebration, love, devotion or military might, but taken together, the mood of melancholy is unmistakable, which by now has been permanently woven into the fabric of this thriving cosmopolitan city.

Irish indie rock band The Cranberries will perform two concerts in Istanbul and Çeşme in July 2010.

The group was one of the most successful rock acts of the '90s and sold over 14.5 million albums in the United States alone. WHAT IS "HIDRELLEZ"?

It is said that whatever you wish for on that night, will come true!

"Hıdrellez", is one of the seasonal festivals of all Turkish world which is celebrated as the first day of the "early summer". It is also "day of Hızır", the day on which prophets Hızır and Ilyas met with each other on earth. The words Hızır and İlyas have since fused together pronounced as Hıdrellez. Hıdrellez Day falls on May 5-6. There are various theories about the origin of Hızır and Hıdrellez. Various ceremonies and rituals have been performed for various gods with the arrival of spring or summer in Mesopotamia, Anatolia, Iran, Greece and in fact all eastern Mediterranean countries since ancient times. One widespread belief suggests that Hızır is a prophet who has attained immortality by drinking the water of life (ab-ı hayat), and who has reached God, and wanders around among people from time to time, especially in the spring, and helps people in difficulty and distributes plenty and health. The identity of Hızır, the place and the time he lived in are not certain. Hızır is the symbol of spring, and the new life which emerges with it. In Turkey, where belief in Hızır is widespread, the characteristics attributed to him are as follows:

• Hızır rushes to the aid of people in difficulty and grants peoples’ wishes.
• He always helps well-meaning, benevolent people.
• He brings plenty and wealth wherever he stops.
• He brings remedies to those who are troubled and health to the sick.
• He helps plants to grow, animals to reproduce, and human beings to grow strong
• He helps improve peoples’ fortune.
• He is the symbol of good omens.
• He has the God-given power of working miracles.

Hıdrellez Festival, which is still celebrated with grand ceremonies in Anatolia, has been celebrated since ancient times. Although it is celebrated under different names and in different times, it is possible to see the motifs of Hıdrellez in many places. The arrival of spring and awakening of nature have been perceived by mankind as a phenomenon to be celebrated. In fact, Hıdrellez, as a spring festival, has a universal character.

"The Hıdrellez at Ahırkapı" Rituals

The Armada Hotel has first started to organize a semi-contemporary “Hidrellez” at Ahırkapı streets and invited all of Istanbul’s citizens to come and participate in 1997. For the last couple of years “The Hıdrellez at Ahırkapı Streets” event has been turned to a collective civil community activity. Each year the activities begin on Ahirkapi Street and spread to the adjacent streets on 5th of May. Towards midnight the traditional fires will be jumped over and the wishes will be attached on the traditional Nahils. -The individual wishes are written on a piece of paper and attached on the Nahil´s that you will find in front of the Armada Garage.-Nahil is a symbolic "wish-tree" and an ornament from Ottoman culture. The ones at the Ahirkapi Street were first designed and used during an "Earth Day" celebration on April 22, 2002. Since then they are being used as the "wish tree" of the Hıdrellez spring festivals which is organized by "The Association of Ahırkapi Hidrellez Festivals" and supported by local Eminönü Municipality as well as by Istanbul Governorship. In 2009, the activity was credited and supported by "Istanbul 2010, European Capital of Culture" project.

Until 2009, all the traditional spring foods and drinks (both the traditional ones and the brewery) used to be sold through the street-buffets, while the local musicians perform gypsy and Balkan music. In order to get food and drink at Ahırkapı Street one should have bought the coupons for food (the white ones) and brewery (the red ones) first. Those coupons were treated like cash money! The Ahirkapi Roman Orchestra, which is consisting of the neighboring musician groups of Ahirkapi community, performed street concerts along with the guest performers... Küçük Hasan from Lüleburgaz a zurna genius and the drum master Tamer Kum and his group came every year. In 2007, The Ahirkapı Junior Orchestra (the children of the “Great Roman Orchestra” members), The "Macedon Koçani Orkestar", Buzuki Orhan, Yannis and Gorkem Saulis; Semaver Theatre Company, Goksenin Ileri Istanbul Songs Group joined and and DJ Shantel performed along with the others during whole evening.

The number of the participants significantly increased and reached 50.000 in 2007 and over 70.000 in 2008. So that the venue had to be carried to a larger venue in 2009: The Ahırkapı Park!

JAPAN YEAR 2010 IN TURKEY

The friendly relations, which started with the visit of Ottoman Empire's Ertugrul Frigate to Japan and the disaster following the visit, will reach its 120th anniversary in 2010.

Not only the Ertugrul Frigate Disaster but also several historical incidents such as the rescue of Japanese people by a Turkish Airlines plane during Iran-Iraq War that symbolize the friendship between two countries are frequently mentioned. What is common in those two incidents is the courage and fidelity that the ancestors of the two nations displayed under difficult circumstances without expecting any return.

The two nations are proud of each other because of such a historical background.

Relations between the two countries in all fields, especially in political, economic, cultural fields, have developed thanks to our ancestors and the mutual interaction established between the people of these two countries. The number of Japanese tourist visiting Turkey has been growing steadily and it has reached 160,000, meanwhile Japanese investors' activities in Turkey are also growing. The number of symbolic projects such as the Bosphorus Rail Tube Crossing (Marmaray) Project and the construction of the Kaman-Kalehoyuk Archeological Museum are growing as well.

Even if we are very content with the level of relations between the two countries, we believe that the relations still have the capacity to be enhanced.

Therefore, we would like to state here once more that we have to stand face to face. We strongly believe that by standing face to face, the two countries would be able to walk towards new common goals hinging on new discoveries and their relationship based on mutual trust. Turkey, which lies at a strategic crossing between Asia, Europe and Middle East, has an important role in the stability of the region. We would like to further our partnership with such an important friendly country.

The “Japan Year” is a very important opportunity to re-discuss the current friendship and partnership between the two countries and “friendly Turkey” and to re-establish relations.

We have chosen the following three items as the primary objectives of the “Japan Year”:
